Cat Parent -> click in the viewport and set the scene ( a triangle will appear)
Create Pelvis -> scale to the right size. click on pelvis - modify mode and Add Legs
First thing to do: set to 0
when wanting to add a limb, always click the top of the joint that the limb needs to be added to. (e.g. top of hip for legs, top of torso for arm. )
For head to be added, add another spine to the top of the torso and modify it. The head itself can be modified by transforming into an editable poly and add more detail.
When body is finished, start animating by clicking in Motion ( at the top, same line as create and Modify), and select first option from Abs (under the screen that appears as default. Always make sure the animation button is set on animation (green with arrow in).
At the bottom of the screen, click on AutoKey. as you start changing the stance of the model, move the cursor from 0 to 10 (frames), 20, etc till the animation is finished.
When all is done, create a scene for the model to be set on (plane and model it around the back of the model, so when rendered, it won't sit in a black void).
For the render: Render setup -> Common ->Active Time Segment -> scroll down in the same screen to Render Output, click it. Click on files next to it, select Avi in stead of All formats -> Render -> NJPEG
Next, I have played with unwrapping and texturing the head and here is what I have come up with:
